April Epitaph

When I die
plant obscene dahlias
in my backyard
throw a loud rock show
invite all the neighbors
the police
everyone I ever knew
make sure my cat is there
let the red wine
undrunk while I was alive
flow freely
fly poems on paper airplanes
from Mount Tom
and a crop duster
tugging an aerial banner
SHE WROTE 30 POEMS EACH APRIL

#NaPoWriMo Day 30! Whew.
For the Tuesday Platform in the Imaginary Garden

Treading vs. Stomping

In battle
between my wide-stance
booted footfalls
versus your dream-cloths
who would win?

Groundtruth

Substance earned you this
and mine, lingering weak
You’d stop me with a kiss
before I think to speak--

Now counting empty days
till we two kiss again
Bosomed in my domain
I pen this verse for you--
 friend--

The kiss by Clarence H. White (1904)

The Years Can Be Cruel

Spied my eighth-grade teacher in the supermarket aisle,
still gorgeous with age, trying to hide a black eye--

Morning Breath

The green dream
true sweet rain
of blue morning
sigh welcome
lonely souls
give cover to grief
give time for pause
and the chance
to try again

Advice for Achieving a Modicum of Liberty

1-2-3
count losses
sit beside them
1-2-3
consider
painting woes
the colors
of the sea
1-2-3
then
count your stones

Can't Shake Hard Times

Hard times
gotcha by the collar
right up in your face
with its sour breath
and spittle

Hard times
pours from the sky
like it’s never rained before
floods your basement
with its guttural gulps

Seems like hard times
is counting your mistakes
then multiplying
by a factor of 4
some days 400

What to do with hard times
but eat them for breakfast
lunch and dinner
as hard times is all
you can afford anyway

No Substitute

When you set
your foot upon grass
intoxicated with dew
and air
and freshness of things

Remember
your good fortune
Reflect upon the earth
as it’s long past time
to atone

Seasonal Covenant

Seems ridiculous
to make promises
in a broken world
except there is still a day
in April
after such a long brown
when suddenly
everything turns green
forsythia and dogwood pop
for a few days of color
and the rain smells so sweet
I almost
want to promise you
everything

#NaPoWriMo Day 21!
For Skylover’s Word List: PROMISE

Three Spring Shorts

Spring blooms
like tempers
easily inflamed

Sweetest blooms
traced closely
by the blues

Hope peeks
from behind
cascade of pink

Nesting

Finally
completed work
on my most comfortable
nest with a view

Decorated with photos
of us in happy times
enjoyed a good night’s sleep
since I don’t know how long

But as I discovered
that someone stole my ladder
now I’m thinking
on whether to stay here

Or to burn the damn tree down

Beautiful and Dumb

Time
was
we were
stupid, had
no idea the cost
of joy, its frayed edges faded,
thinning, splinters at the heart
        of things, always cold

In Which I Admit to Lacking Faith in Human Ability

In this virulent season
flowers might confess
to a resistant case
of imposter syndrome
and take back their blooms

Birds might
simply refuse to sing
trees could just give up
say fuck it all
they prefer bare and grey

Wonder whether we humans
could pick up the slack
for color and fresh air
song and altitude
in this spring confessional

#NaPoWriMo Day 14!
Skylover’s Word List: CONFESS

Unexpected Piano

Aroma of dewberry
     (retired)
precedes your entrance
& should be accompanied
      by sax solo

Resort to defacing
glossy chick-magazine
      spreads
with ink moustaches
and horns

Against all logic
gonna need another hit
     of Café Bustelo
to swallow down
   this desire
