Yielding

I gripped
a digital frame
in shaky hands
snapshots
of my children
shuttering by
in time
with my jittery
heart

Exercise in Fragility

If grief has a flavor
it’s strawberry
conventional
seeds stuck in dental work
If despair commutes
it’s stuck on Route 9
forgetting the back way
Sadness sings all the songs
on Imperial Bedroom
and Zenyatta Mondatta
smells like your deodorant
anticipates meaty hands
circling its waist
constantly rubs a bruise
with its left thumb
unthinking
waits for rain

Gridlock

So much depends
on transformers
transmitting voltage
to service drops
carrying current
through a frayed cord
behind the toaster
in my kitchen.

For Fireblossom Friday in the Imaginary Garden, riffing off The Red Wheelbarrow by William Carlos Williams.

Nightcrawler

Sidewalk
worm’s gratitude
for sun
following a rainstorm
must be short-lived
blistering
confusing
like the shudder
after flutter
inside
upon car door slam
outside
I felt I was drowning
flailing
bloated
floated
to the surface
warmed myself
belly to the sun
now you’re home
finding yourself
amongst worms
surfacing
inside your brain
and I’m parched
