Under Cover

The book of poverty
dog-eared with possibility
shines bright as it waits
for stolen moments
its weary reader seeking
an iridescent forgettery
of phantasmal escapery
absorbing responsibility

While a gold-plated volume
pristine and uncracked
glistens forever
on an oft-dusted shelf
its rapacious protagonists
static in gross veneer
covering no evidence
of any imagination at all

  1. This prompt took you in a totally original direction. I love the analogy of the books, most especially the way you introduced your theme in the opening line, and all the lovely words of escapery.

  2. I love the contrast of the book of poverty dog-eared with possibility and the gold-plated volume that remains uncracked. I wouldn’t be interested in reading one that has ‘no evidence of any imagination at all’ – I’d go for ‘iridescent forgettery of phantasmal escapery’ every time!

  4. Oh I love how you portray the opposites... I see gilded walls and empty hearts in this.
