Any Friday Afternoon

What would happen
if I spent this hour
watching my clock
like it might sprout wings
latch on to my mousing wrist
with its desk-clock feet
and launch us both
out the sixth floor window
over the YMCA rooftop
and three tenement high-rises
to I don’t even know what’s
beyond those
beyond my imagination
far beyond my expectations
for a clock-watching Friday
afternoon
at the office
wishing to fly

  1. and launch us both .... to I don’t even know what’s
    beyond those
    beyond my imagination

... endless possibilities for one tethered to watching time ....

I really like the cadence and pacing in the poem, and the words, they capture the waiting on time feeling that can feel like constriction ...

  3. Yes time flies until you are waiting for 5 pm on Friday. Love this Marian!

  4. Sometimes the clock is stuck in the mud then it leaves on wings of its own.

  6. I have a love-hate relationship with clocks these days, Marian. When I retired, I swore I wouldn't look at a watch or clock again but it was harder than I thought. I love my watch - it has a (not real) butterfly in it!

  7. I too swore that I retired, I would never look at a clock or a calendar again. But of course I do. things to do, places to be. But I remember being suffocated by time that refused to pass.

  8. i've sometimes wondered, what if I just stepped off here - would the fall feel like flying?

  9. It is a pretty long day when one has to anticipate a wonderful weekend. A universal thought in many minds on that Friday afternoon!

  11. I also wish you could fly Marian. I wish I could also. Sometimes "time flies", most times when you aren't watching, not watching the clock. :-)
