Dubious Haul

A locked box
at the end of a red thread
containing all the sighs
of middle age
complaints like barnacles
dreams dragging behind
splintering on the rocks
all of yesterday’s ideas
bobbing
mostly regret

For Kerry’s photo prompt in the Imaginary Garden

  2. Oh the weight of those sighs... all the whatifs pulling... but I hope that there is a catch somewhere.

  4. I like how you took the feel and implied story of the photo and brought into a more modern realm. I especially like how you placed color into the poem (red) to sort of break out of the image. Well done and viva la!

Complaints can end up as not being addressed. The bane of the senior citizens who are being ignored!

  9. The title said it all for middle age. The things we ferry and drown ... I couldn't help think of Balthazar's box in "Amahl and The Night Visitor" become this ... burden. How true.

  10. I read this last night, Marian, before turning in and the whole melancholy frame of reference really impacted on me. Amazing how the merest thread may drag one down.

  11. It's like Pandora's box! I particular like 'complaints like barnacles' and 'bobbing / mostly regret' - a very effective line break, Marian.
