Signs of the Time

We listened
to Nikki Giovanni
read poems
of love and resistance
at Chicago Public library
Outside queens and dykes
danced in streets
illuminated with rainbows
We joined and kissed
in front of a yelling man
with a sign
reading God Hates Fags
In memory of my dear friend Tracey, with love.

NaPoWriMo Day 12! For Izy’s prompt to the Real Toads SIGNS OF THE TIME. I am not posting a photo of the sign referenced in this photo. We all know what it looks like.

  1. News flash: God didn't write that sign.

  2. This is incredibly powerful. We've had those hateful idiots from Westboro protest here a few times.

  3. I'm glad you joined and kissed before the ugliness of the yelling man. One can but hope that love will overcome one day...
    Anna :o]

  4. I really like how your poem lets us experience the shock of the event, as it happened. There we are, enjoying music with people we like, kissing and dancing, when the world is sour by some idiot putting words in a god's mouth. Makes me want to take the sign and beat them senseless with it.

  5. Such a moving tribute to your friend, and to all who come together in acts of friendship and kindness in the face of bigotry and ignorance.

  6. Excellent poem. I can tell you, as a Bible-believing Christian, that God does not hate fags.

  7. Powerful tribute. In general yelling men should be avoided/confronted with joy.

  8. Love this:
    "We joined and kissed
in front of a yelling man
    with a sign"

  9. Marian, I an honored that you would use my prompt for such a lovely tribute. I particularly like how you chose to focus on the positive actions and love of the characters and not give any bother to sign holder. I love this poem and am sending hugs.

  10. I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. And glad you can write like this ~

  11. Sorry for your loss but a wonderful poem!
