Spirit of '15

Pulled over on the highway,
huddled on the berm,
eyes skyward,
reverent--
Distant cheers,
toddler shrieking in Spanish
as fog meets fireworks contrails
in thunderheads
roiling over farmlands
resembling
    the day after--
So many cars criss-cross
cornfields
on sleepy roads,
one wonders where they all came from,
to whom they return--
People who know better.

  1. Is there always a purpose or do we raise the dust and soil the sky with contrails for any purpose at all? - maybe there's still place in hell for us.

  3. Visual pollution at its worst. Are we a nasty part of this criss-cross scene?
Last night at our fireworks, outdoors in lawn chairs, some nitwit was flying his lighted drone between the fireworks and us. It was off to the side of his view.

  4. Your sarcasm here is so great and the picture so vivid. I don't have internet and am away from home so must be brief, but I always love your brusque and clever tone in this type of poem. k.

  5. So visually strong I can see the clouds roiling over the farmlands........we have forest fires up here and I woke to an eerie yellow silent world this morning. Devastating, watching the forests burn. Because of humans.

  7. If I can't see it from my yard I'll just not see it. It is crazy how people, "who know better", go nuts over the fireworks. Nice job

  10. I used to enjoy the chaos and crowds at fireworks displays but not any more! Rather stay at home and comfort my dogs, who are scared of the neighbors shooting off fireworks!

  13. It is good to have something to celebrate, even a concept of freedom is better than none these days. It's the fireworks I cannot abide.

  14. I do love how you tell me so much in so few words. I could hear the thunder rolling in, see the sky light up with color.

You move me , make me think, every single time. xo

  15. It's a clown show, if you ask me. Another circus distraction---meaning long gone. I'm glad to think someone somewhere may know better.
