At My Funeral

Harmonica will screech
as a depressed troupe
of anthropomorphized candy
bears me to the cemetery
in my pop-tart coffin;
a murder of crows will drop
promissory-note confetti
on the solemn heads
of the temporarily grieving
who, once they get home,
will pop corks and dance jigs.

  1. Another piece out of left field - this mixes the macabre with the fantastical, and quite an interesting choice of subject round the death of old year.

  7. "The temporarily grieving" sounds familiar, unfortunately. Too many people dead or dying in my world right now, too many people too sad.

  11. Forgive me, I found the visuals so funny. I shall sit down one day soon and write about my later life and funeral and be inspired by you.

  12. For me the attending "murder of crows" is the omniscient eye that unspools this grim tale. I've sometimes been the life of this party too.

  13. I hate it when the candy gets uppity like that. To be the filling in a poptart coffin is a rather grim prospect, but at least you're being recycled as deliciousness. ;_)

  14. Another year bites the dust! Happy New Year, Marian, with less confection and confetti, but just as much pleasure coming in the new one. I think it will be a better one.

  15. The images are borderline surreal and wildly vivid, and "murder of crows" is a wonderful phrase. With writing like this, I'm grateful that the only funeral service will be for the passing year and not this particular chronicler.
