Gratitude's Day

You know it’s Thanksgiving
when you peel your sweet potatoes
listening to the Macy’s parade,
when you cry during commercials,
drum corps, Rockettes kicklines
& Charlie Brown’s holiday meal,
when you play Yahtzee well into
the evening after an unplanned
but predictable nap on the couch,
when you hug your kids extra-long
& consider actually sending your
gratitude skyward in the form
of a soaring, bird-like prayer.

Happy Thanksgiving, dear readers! #28 of 30 Poems In November to benefit Center for New Americans. With special love to Kirsten Piccini, who also tears up during the Macy's parade.

  1. Happy day my dear friend... Not only did the parade make me tear up but the love flowing from your words did too. How grateful and lucky I am to have you in my life

    Smooch!

    1. We had two games going- Yahtzee and Scrabble. But we share the gratitude that suffused the day.

  2. Being thankful and wanting to be there together is a realization. But many may not be aware of their obligations. Nicely Marian!

  3. Yes, Yes. True and uplifting in the Marian tone of wonder and discovery. This is part of the tone I love in "Superpowers," where reality takes me soaring to the heights.
