Lust Pride

You cannot avert your eyes
so long as I wear this mask.
This is our secret surprise.
I won’t lie, so please don’t ask

for evidence of my sins.
I can’t begin to inform
your warm heart, the cold seeps in
if my sin’s mask goes unworn.

For Grapeling’s prompt to the Real Toads: MASKS

  5. I love the rhythm of your lines, the rhyme sets it all up perfectly. So interesting how the mask transfixes the viewer.

  6. Such a short and musical piece to have so much context and nuance. In our most intimate moments, the mask is both enticement and separation, protection and surrender. Loved it, Marian.

  14. "I won’t lie, so please don’t ask" is my favorite part, Marian. There was a time when I told dozens, if not hundreds, of unnecessary lies. Now I can tell only the truth, so it is best if no one asks.
