life in the express lane

Traffic’s backed up
all the way to the light
by the post office.
Here comes an ambulance,
patriotic red & blue
flashing lights reflected
in the plate glass window
of the new Auto Express.

At your friendly
neighborhood big box store,
there’s four employees
for twelve check-out lanes,
plus six Express Self-Serve
check-yourself-out stations.
Whew! You aren’t required
to speak a kind word to

Nobody.

Poem number two of 30 Poems in April!

  1. I can never understand under-manned check-out tills in busy supermarkets. I've been thinking: "Only in Africa..."
