This morning I woke
to the thinnest Shire melody,
scuffed in my slippers to
make the coffee.
Kids wrote about Heidi and Peter,
the Alm Uncle
and Klara with her bath-chair,
then we broke for second breakfast
and Hobbit-talk.
We watched the inauguration
noting that Hail To The Chief
is the President’s music,
observing the First Lady’s bangs
and how big the girls are now.
We listened intently to a poem
that considered the collective
naming of constellations,
pondered how everyone loves poetry
on the day we celebrate
Dr. King’s birthday.
Cajoled into eating carrots,
kids summarized it all thus:
Judge me not by how I look
but by how I act.
