how to dry towels

Funny what’s stuck
from our time together.

When I do laundry
(and laundry never ends),

I channel that chick
from New Jersey, who was

teaching the Swedes
how to dry towels that time,

as though in Sweden
they don’t have machines

for drying laundry.
The most important thing

is to give your towels
a good snap to air them out.

I snap out my towels
and close lid on all that

with a wink to you.

Poem #9 of 30 Poems in November to benefit Center for New Americans.

  1. I dry my towels on a line in the wind and sun - no snap required...

  2. An ordinary moment, with reflection on the past, made extraordinary by the telling. Skill.

  3. I feel like I've intercepted an inside joke between two people very much in love <3 Love it!

  4. the wink is the best part.
The nod to a friendship, or love or even family...when I fold clothes I think of my mom. I imagine her hands folding the towel and then smoothing the wrinkles (In a towel??? Right?). My wink to her...to smooth them too.
