In the light of tomorrow,
when the angst haze
has dissipated
like steamed milk in cappuccino
or rising from scorched pavement,
once it's habituated
and commonplace,
we will look back at today
and recognize its bounty,
seeing that it exceeds all others.
Maybe we should embrace it now.

A fine idea, Marian. I am liking the steamed milk comparison.
ReplyDeletethanks :)
ReplyDeletethis is my second poem from that tom waits song. i'm actually trying to express something that i haven't quite figured out how to write yet. hopefully it will come!
Yes, be grateful for today, today. I liked the steamed milk analogy too.
ReplyDeleteeasier said than done, sometimes. thank you, love!
ReplyDeleteThis one suits my expected optimism today.
ReplyDeleteI have said to myself sometime: "Self, enjoy today. This is the best it will be." Sometimes it works! Nice write.
ReplyDeleteangst haze
ReplyDeletelove and lived this line
This is lovely:
ReplyDeletethe angst haze
has dissipated
like steamed milk in cappuccino
This is so wise..if one gets to take this one thing from Waits' song, then one should receive it as a gift.
ReplyDeleteangst haze... an apt and relatable phrase pulled from a creative well. Nicely done, Marian. In the moment is always the goal and requires such discipline!
ReplyDeletepearls of wisdom.so true.
ReplyDeleteLove the cappuccino image and the final line continues to echo in my ear... Indeed, it is a very good object lesson - I have seen the truth of it.
ReplyDeleteDissipated like steam milk...life certainly does that. Such wisdom and yes we should embrace life before the steam leaves :)
ReplyDeleteYes. Goethe wrote, "There is nothing more valuable than this day." I like the way you wrote it so much better! 8-)
ReplyDeletehas dissipated
ReplyDeletelike steamed milk in cappuccino
Liked that a lot. Wise words to embrace today! :)
i'm glad yinz all liked that steamed milk in cappuccino line, i was questioning it.
ReplyDeletei guess that's how it goes :)
great sentiment. 'angst haze', like that.
ReplyDeletethanks! i started out trying to write about what it will feel like when our kids are grown and gone, the angst of teenagers and all that, but then it turned into this, a different thing altogether.
DeleteYES! I remember when I was raising my kids, struggling as a single mom....yet now, when I look back, what bountiful, rich years those were. I love your "maybe we should embrace it now". Definitely!!!!!!
ReplyDeletePerfect. The froth of the steamed milk disappears all too soon, and angst can be equally ephemeral.
ReplyDeleteK
ah yes, thank you, lovely women :)
ReplyDeleteNot sure about the wisdom of that last line, but the rest convinces by its fine writing.
