a note of sadness

A poem by my grandmother. Written in 1928, when she was 18 years old.
I love you, dear, as they alone can love
Who know that just around the corner of a smile
Lie tears; and just beyond the sunshine of a glance
Wait pain and bitter disappointment;
And in the sweetest passage of a song
There lurks a note of sadness.

  1. Sometimes?

    I imagine that I can hear your grandmother's words as I read. That she is reading her words to me.

    She has a lovely voice.

  2. i have one tape around here somewhere containing my grandmother's voice. it is only a sentence or two, she is introducing a friend of hers to an audience. her friend was giving a lecture. it is precious.

    of course, these poems were written when she was very young, and as i read these, i hear her voice as i knew it. my grandmother's voice.

  3. I love your grandma's stuff... I totally would've had a crush on her back in the day.
